AMT gives the option of paper and pencil examinations with a proctor for certain certifications. However, all certifications are available by computerized testing.
The following certifications are available by paper and pencil with a proctor: Medical Assistant, Medical Administrative Specialist, Dental Assistant, and Phlebotomy Technician.
Q: Where are paper and pencil examinational administered? A: At the school.
Q: How frequently are tests administered? A: The school decides the date (after a proctor/AMT member has been secured), time and place of the examination and informs AMT.
Q: Who are the proctors? A: Proctors are certified members in good standing of AMT. AMT finds the proctors through the State Society or through referrals.
Q: An AMT certified member is an instructor/administrator at our school, can he/she proctor? A: No. for security reasons proctors may not teach or work at the school.
Q: Does the school pay the proctor? A: No. AMT pays the proctor an honorarium. There is no financial obligation to the school for certification.
Q: What type of paperwork is needed for paper and pencil examination? A: The school must fill out a "Roster Form" which includes the name of all students who will be sitting the exam, date of the exam, type of exam to be administered and the proctor's name.
Q: Is the paper and pencil examination more expensive to take than computerized testing? A: No, the costs are exactly the same.
Q: What identification is needed for testing? A: Photo identification is needed at time of testing (driver's license, state-issued identification card, military identification or passport).
Q: Does the paper and pencil test have the same number of questions as computerized testing? A: Both test formats are identifical in length.

Q: When are the paper and pencil test results available? A: Reporting of scores usually takes eight to ten weeks after the completion of the examination. All transcripts and paperwork must be completed prior to scores being released.
Q: How soon can an applicant retake the exam after an unsuccessful attempt? A: Examinations may be retaken 90 days after the initial attempt. |
