Certification Requirements and Qualifications


** AMT is approved as a Phlebotomy Certification Organization in California**

1. Applicant shall be of good moral character.

2. Applicant shall meet one of the following requirements:

 A. * Graduated from a phlebotomy program accredited by an organization approved by the US Department of Education.

 B. * Graduated from an acceptable program in an institution accredited by a Regional Accrediting Commission or by a national accrediting organization approved by the US Department of Education.

 C. * Successfully completed an acceptable phlebotomy training program which includes at least 120 hours of didactic instruction and 120 hours of clinical practicum.

 D. * Completed at least 1,040 hours of acceptable work experience as a phlebotomy technician within the past three (3) years; this to include venipunctures, skin punctures, specimen processing, communication skills, and clerical duties.

*All applicants applying under Requirements 3. A, B, C, D, must have completed a minimum of 50 successful venipunctures and 25 successful capillary punctures. (AMT will verify with the facilities listed in Part III of this application.)

 E. The AMT Board of Directors has further determined that applicants who have passed a phlebotomistexamination which has been for the purpose of state licensure shall be eligible for RPT (AMT) certification.

 F. the AMT Board of Directors has further determined that applicants holding other phlebotomy certifications obtained by examination, and who are determined by the Board to have met the AMT training and experience requirements, may be considered for RPT (AMT) certification without further examination.

3. All applicants applying under 3. A, B, C, D, must take and pass the AMT certification examination for

California Applicants:   3 E and F does not apply unless you have taken and passed a phlebotomy examination after April 9, 2003. 

Approved Experience Criteria:  All approved phlebotomy experience credited towards certification must be earned in an approved health care facility that engages in the collection, examination or transportation of materials derived from the human body.
