Certification Requirements and Qualifications

1. Applicant shall be of good moral character.

2. Applicant shall meet one of the following requirements (Check one box only):

A. Graduated from a dental assistant program accredited by an organization approved by the US Department of Education.

B. Graduated from a dental assistant program in an institution accredited by a Regional Accrediting Commission or by a national accrediting organization approved by the US Department of Education.

C. Completed a dental assisting training program offered and approved by the Armed Forces.* The applicant must also have completed a minimum of one (1) year of full-time (or equivalent) experience in the dental assisting profession.

*All training programs must have been structured to address the following context areas: 1) office assisting skills, 2) dental sciences, 3) clinical procedures, and 4) radiology.

D. Applicant shall have been employed in the occupation of Dental Assisting for a minimum of three (3) years full time (5,250 hours of experience) and shall present a recommendation from anemployer (of the applicant) who is a dentist.

3. Applicant must be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross, or show proof of comparable training. The date on the CPR card should be current at the time of AMT certification. (If physical limitations prevent CPR certification, contact the AMT Office.)

4. All applicants must take and pass the AMT Certification Examination for Registered Dental Assistant (RDA).
