AMT RELEASES COLT SURVEY RESPONSES
August 16, 2001. AMT has released survey results on the primary job functions and demographics of Certified Office Laboratory Technicians (COLTs) to ensure that AMT certification exams address their specific job scope. COLTs are health practitioners qualified by education, experience and examination to perform routine medical laboratory testing and office tasks typically associated with a physician’s office practice. The technician performs waivered and moderately complex laboratory testing, medical (front) office tasks, and performs a variety of tasks involving direct patient contact.
Overall, 47% of all COLTs currently certified by AMT responded to the survey. The findings were released in May 2001. COLTs indicated that they spend a moderate-to-great deal of time on the following functions, and they rank each of these functions important-to-very important for a successful job performance.
- Quality assurance/quality control
- Urinalysis
- Phlebotomy
- Patient test management and specimen collection
- Safety standards, procedures, & OSHA regulations
- Professional communication and interpersonal relations
Almost 60% of COLTs work in a physician’s office and 20% in a clinic environment. Additional demographics were gathered about age, professional experience, job location, income, etc.
